Dexter Filkins?s excellent report (Sept. 7) raises the question: If the Taliban and Al Qaeda are in a tribal war along the remote border hills of Pakistan, why is America wasting the lives of its personnel in a war that will be fought anyway (as it has, uninterrupted, for centuries) and ?possibly lost?? Our support of Pakistan, although its complexity is completely incomprehensible to most Americans, can surely be remotely provided. To sacrifice American lives ? for people that, quite frankly, have little understanding of us but much contempt ? is wrong.
